General Meeting

October 7, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Our October speaker will be professor Sukanta Bose. He is a member of the Physics and Astronomy Faculty at the Washington State University Pullman. His principal research interests are in the fields of Gravitation and Cosmology.
Professor Bose will be presenting a talk on The First Direct Detection of a Gravitational Wave Signal and the Dawn of a New Era in Astronomy. This will summarize the nature of the gravitational wave signal that was recently detected at LIGO, which was the first wave detected. This wave was emitted by two colliding black holes 1.3 billion years ago. In addition to describing the physics of the black hole system, he will also discuss what may lie ahead for scientists aiming to use gravitational waves to push the frontiers of physics and astronomy.
