Young Astronomers

Amateur Astronomers

The Spokane Astronomical Society Hosts two STEM related youth clubs:

Junior Amateur Astronomers (JAA): This club is aimed at grade school (k-5) youth. We meet monthly to explore a different astronomy related topic. Other STEM activities are also integrated into the meetings.

Young Amateur Astronomers (YAA): This club is aimed at middle and high school youth (6-12). The YAA is focused on both astronomy and engineering topics. They are currently working on the NASA Radio Jove project and building their own radio telescope to track the weather on Jupiter and the Sun! Please scroll down to view the current tool/material request list for the YAA project.

Both clubs usually meet on the third Saturday of the month. For current dates, times, and location, please email Jenny Harrington.

*Please note that meeting times may occasionally change due to holidays or other events. Please check the Asterisk newsletter to verify the meeting time each month.

All YAA meetings are open to the public and we encourage you to come check out a YAA event!

Youth members also receive the same benefits as other club members in the SAS, with the exception of voting rights. This includes membership in the Astronomical League and the ability to check out club telescopes after membership requirements are met.

Participation in the YAA is for children under the age of 18.
